Case Study: 2024 Victorian Training Awards

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Victorian Training Awards (VTA), which celebrates excellence in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

Not only were we engaged to film and photograph the VTA Gala – the VET sector’s night-of-nights and the most prestigious event on Victoria’s training calendar – but we also filmed and photographed the 40 finalists in the lead up to the event.

Our diverse skillset and flexible approach were perfect for this large-scale project with a tight turnaround – read on to find out how we did it.

Part 1 – The finalist and gala videos

We had approximately three weeks to film and photograph 40 finalists across metropolitan and regional Victoria, with another three weeks to edit and deliver the final videos. With these tight timelines and geographical distances, project management was key to keeping everything on track.

We had multiple videographers and photographers on board to capture all the necessary footage. Photography comprised of four final photographs of each finalist, including a portrait and candid shots of the finalist undertaking tasks related to their training. The edited images were sent from each location as they were complete.

For videography, there were two separate final products that needed to be delivered. Each finalist was to have their own 30-40 second video showing them working in-situ and answering interview questions. These would be used for promotion on social media, the website and EDMs.

In addition, there were 14 gala videos that needed to be created for the 14 awards that were being presented. These approximately 2-minute videos would be shown on gala night, introducing each award’s finalists before the award winner was announced.

All videos were to include captions, intros and outros, lower thirds, and voiceover.

Part 2 – The VTA Gala

The gala awards night recognises, highlights and celebrates excellence in the sector, with apprentices, trainees, students, employers, teachers and training providers taking centre stage. The ceremony was held on Friday 30 August at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

While for the sector it was a night to celebrate, our work continued as we photographed and filmed the event. Our brief was clear: to capture the energy, atmosphere, and key highlights of the night, plus a range of content that could be used to promote next year’s awards.

We had a range of videography deliverables:

  • A 90-120 second highlight video of the night – capturing the prestige and excitement, communicated by a mix of testimonials from winners, sponsors, VIP guests and presenters; plus, atmospheric shots of the evening, entertainment and guest experience
  • 60-90 second winner videos, showcasing the major award winners being interviewed after getting their trophies.
  • 30-40 second sponsor interviews
  • 20-30 second vox pops, of on-the-spot interviews of guests on the night
  • 30-60 second student designer interview
  • 10-20 soundbites edited from the above

Photography included capturing all the highlights from guests arriving and entertainment, to each winner receiving their award.
